Local Civitan clubs meet a wide variety of needs in their communities, with an emphasis on helping people with developmental disabilities. The Civitan International Foundation continues this mission with a $20 million dollar commitment to its flagship project, the Civitan International Research Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Civitan is an international association of local community service clubs. Started in Birmingham, AL in 1917, Civitan has become one of the world’s leading volunteer service organizations, with more than 40,000 Men, women and youth in 24 countries. Some famous Civitans include: Past Presidents - Bill Clinton, J.F. Kennedy, Dwight D. Eisenhower, F.D .Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, and Harry Truman as well as Thomas Edison, Richard Petty, and Bo Jackson.
Local Civitans meet on the First and Third Thursday of the month at 6:00 at the Denny's Restaurant on Nicholasville Road. Our meetings last approximately 1 1/2 hours. We meet to discuss upcoming projects that will benefit the community. A few past projects have included Special Olympics, donations to schools, etc We are currently looking for Social Organizations to assist.
